architect david adjaye has designed a wireless speaker for new york-based audio brand master & dynamic. engineered to offer ‘a new geometry of sound’, the MA770’s sculptural composition reflects the sensory-focused craftsmanship synonymous with adjaye’s architecture, while the premium materials help create an immersive, room-filling sound.
the bold design has been cast in a distinct geometric form using a concrete composite. this offers a range of acoustic benefits such as increased dampening, reduced resonance, and a purer sound. master & dynamic claims that the dampening properties are so high that the speaker can play at full volume without causing a record to skip, or the table and floor to vibrate.
‘this speaker is not about the traditional idea of making boxes, but about a directional form,’ explains david adjaye. ‘I became fascinated with the idea of using triangles to break down the mass of the box, and to see if we could dissolve the sense of volume through sculptural detail. we created a new geometry for this speaker. a new geometry of sound.’

the speaker is comprises dual 4″ woven kevlar long throw woofers, a 1.5″ titanium tweeter, and diamond-cut anodized aluminum controls. in addition, for those who want to reveal the design’s exposed components and hand-finished concrete, the magnetically attached steel grille can be instantly removed without compromising performance.

‘as the industry ebbs towards smaller and more disposable pieces, we continue to defy convention,’ said master & dynamic founder and CEO jonathan levine. ‘the MA770 reinforces scale and prominence. its luxurious design and use of premium materials further enhance its beauty.’

the wireless speaker is powered by 100 watts of class D amplification. the device can be used as a single unit, stereo pair or multi-room setup with built-in chromecast. the unit measures 16 x 20 x 10 inches (410 x 510 x 245mm), and weighs 35lbs (16kg). priced at $1,800 USD, the MA770 is now available for pre-order, and will be available at the MoMA design store from april 25th, 2017.
