Qua reimagines the role of waste collection in future cities through an innovative system of smart trash baskets. Envisioned by the designers N. Basile, N. Chiarelli, and L. Fiorentino, the project aims to merge technology with a friendly, bio-inspired design, shifting the perception of garbage-collecting robots from impersonal machines to approachable and dependable assistants. Its design, inspired by the graceful and synchronized movement of ducks, infuses a touch of playfulness into an otherwise mundane task, creating a more efficient waste collection system for urban environments. Qua operates independently within the cities, recognizing when individuals need to dispose of waste. It navigates towards users providing a receptacle for their trash, and then autonomously returns to its designated charging hub for waste disposal.

Qua represents the designer’s attempt to seamlessly integrate robots into our everyday lives and ordinary routines. Qua is designed to lighten the load on urban waste management while promoting a more convenient and responsible method of keeping our cities clean. With its duck-inspired body mounted on three wheels, it navigates freely through urban landscapes, strolling among pedestrians. Equipped with sensors, it identifies individuals prepared to dispose of waste and approaches them accordingly. Each Qua basket is designated for specific types of waste, simplifying the collection and sorting process. Qua’s user-friendly design encourages proper waste disposal, fostering a collective sense of responsibility within communities for cleaner cities.
