MAGNETS TAKE OVER THE DRIVE

Japanese high-end audio manufacturer Esoteric introduces the T-01, its second turntable to employ the company’s patented MagneDrive System after the Grandioso T1 debuted in 2022. Rather than transferring motion through a belt or direct mechanical contact, the system uses magnetic induction to rotate the platter, physically separating it from the motor responsible for making it spin. In a machine devoted to extracting information from microscopic grooves, the logic is almost suspiciously simple: if vibration is the enemy, perhaps the motor should keep its distance.

At the end of the motor sits what Esoteric calls a Magnetic Driver, built around alternating north and south magnetic poles. Close to it, but never touching, a soft-iron induction wheel wraps around the lower edge of the aluminum platter. As the driver rotates, magnetic force sets the wheel –and therefore the platter– into synchronized motion. This contact-free relationship prevents motor vibration and rumble from traveling directly into the record while doing away with belts altogether, combining high torque with the stable rotational speed needed for 33⅓ and 45 rpm playback.

A 13-KILOGRAM PLATTER THAT FEELS LIGHTER

The magnetic thinking continues with Esoteric’s Magne-Float platter technology, inherited from the Grandioso T1. The substantial aluminum platter physically weighs 13 kg, but magnetic force reduces its effective load on the spindle bearing to approximately 4 kg. Less pressure means less friction, allowing the platter to rotate more freely while retaining the inertia of its actual mass. An inverted bearing positions the platter’s supporting point closer to the record surface, another decidedly meticulous attempt to keep rotation stable when fractions of movement can become fractions of sound.

Around all this controlled motion, the T-01 uses a triple-layer chassis combining aluminum and wood, with a high-gloss piano-lacquered central section. Esoteric has integrated the MagneDrive motor into the chassis this time, making the architecture easier to install than its flagship predecessor, while enclosing the motor in a vibration-absorbing case. Newly developed isolation feet combine a spike, spike pad and damper into a single component to further suppress external vibration and acoustic feedback. For anyone keeping score, this is quite a lot of engineering devoted to making a rotating object behave as though almost nothing is happening.

ANALOG SOUND, TIMED LIKE A DIGITAL MACHINE

Precision is also handled electronically. The T-01 incorporates Esoteric’s Master Sound Discrete Clock motor driver to regulate platter rotation and can synchronize with an external 10MHz master clock, including the company’s G-01XD and G-05 models. The main turntable and its power supply are housed in separate units, isolating the audio mechanism from the power circuitry, while rotational speed can be fine-tuned in 0.1% increments. The standard T-01 arrives with Esoteric’s static-balanced TA-9S tonearm, while the T-01 AL is offered without one; additional arm bases allow as many as two tonearms to be fitted.

Measuring 539 mm wide with its supplied tonearm and weighing 35 kg for the main unit alone, the T-01 is hardly Esoteric going minimalist. What has been simplified is the relationship between its parts: fewer points of mechanical contact, fewer opportunities for unwanted vibration and a more integrated installation than the Grandioso T1 that introduced the technology four years ago. The turntable begins worldwide shipping at the end of September 2026, continuing the Japanese manufacturer’s curious proposition for contemporary analog listening — that one way to make vinyl sound more physical is to engineer as much physical interference out of the machine as possible.
