the ‘L242’ speaker for vonschloo makes a clear visual statement through it’s reduced and focused use of material and finish. estragon was influenced by the ‘folle’, an archaic sound object which has been used in the swiss alps for centuries to call the ‘alpsegen’. the basic cone shape explains the purpose and function immediately. in contrast to many electronic products, the team wanted a 360° design to be attractive from every side and therefore, allowing this sound object to be placed in a variety of living environments. as important as the appearance is the product’s choice of materials. the combination of composite cement, wood, metal and fabric creates an intriguing and alluring finish.

the simple design adapts to its surroundings

the decision to use composite cement was triggered by the fact that the material is one of the best available for acoustic cabinets. the team invested a lot of time in exploring the possibilities of this interesting material before coming up with an appropriate design for the material involved. the contrasting of the used materials is part of the charm. the warm, irregular and rough material of the housing compared with the smooth and delicate stand lends the product a unique visual character.
