Tesla has opened China’s first Giga Laboratory, or Giga Lab, where robots and artisans show visitors how the brand’s electric vehicles are manufactured in 45 seconds. Now open to the public, the Giga Lab is set to follow in the manufacturing and exhibition-like footsteps of its siblings across the world such as the Giga Factory in Berlin. The steel and gray interior of the Giga Lab in Chengdu mimics the style of the Shanghai Gigafactory with its minimal and hushed-down visual language to spotlight the expansive space. In a Twitter post, Tesla Asia confirms that the Giga Lab in Chengdu doubles as a store for visitors to purchase their own Tesla EVs.

In a series of images Tesla Asia published, Tesla’s famed robot arm in its factories, including Berlin, is working on the frame of the Tesla Model 3 on its own and thanks to the waterfall of strings holding the car design’s frame in one piece. Designed to resemble an exhibition, Tesla’s Giga Lab in Chengdu hosts transparent glass cases where car parts are shown to further inform the visitors on the equipment being installed, or can be installed, in the brand’s electric vehicles. As Tesla Asia claims, inside the laboratory, the visitors can feel the ‘hardcore beauty’ of Tesla.

Tesla electric car can be produced in 45 seconds

The first Tesla Giga Lab in China is also a place for people to meet up, briefly stay to chat, and interact with other Tesla fans. Seats and sofas are readily available to accommodate people, spaced out to ensure that the space is maximized and prevent overcrowding. They can even enjoy and inform themselves about the vehicles’ tools and equipment through the frames that enclose car parts and descriptions on the walls. Tesla car models are parked inside the Giga Lab so visitors can get a feel for what they can be driving at the end of their visit and be shown the technology of the electric vehicles using a physical model.

Tesla Shanghai has shared in a post that inside the Giga Lab, visitors are guided on how its electric vehicles are built in around 45 seconds most likely using the robot arm present inside the laboratory. For the car brand, the laboratory is a space where smart and advanced technology meets art, and possibly even design through its minimal and well-illuminated interior. The process of car manufacturing, which may often be hidden from the public, comes into view inside the Giga Lab in Chengdu, a sneak peek into what goes into Tesla’s car production in its factories.
