fisker debuts ocean electric SUV with built-in 'karaoke mode' at CES 2020

live from las vegas: fisker unveiled its ocean crossover today (january 6th) in los angeles just ahead of CES 2020 in las vegas. the american automaker provided details on price of the upcoming electric SUV as well as revealing other new features such as a karaoke mode.

the ocean will start at $37,499 USD  putting it in the same price brakcet as the tesla model 3. fisker also detailed a book service offered through its app, allowing consumers to manage paying their car or schedule maintenance appointments more easily. instead of drivers bringing their car to a shop to get maintenance, the automaker ‘will pick up and return vehicles when maintenance is required, or service is requested.’

at a presentation live-streamed around the world, company founder, henrik fisker, the SUV would feature a karaoke mode that uses the car’s heads-up display to show lyrics. it will also include a ‘california mode,’ where the vehicle’s nine glass windows and panels lower or slide to create ‘an open-air feeling, while still maintaining a full ‘roll cage’ safety structure around the passengers.’

the fisker ocean has officially been named as the follow-up to the electric start-up’s ‘emotion’ car, which was first revealed in 2017. the compact SUV’s sleek exterior is topped off with lightweight solar panels that line the roof. these are said to generate 1,000 clean, free miles to complement its dual motor, 80 kWh battery pack, and help deliver over 480 km of range.

distinguished with a rational grid grille on the front, the exterior of the fisker ocean is split into two distinct sections. black aerodynamic accessories adorn the lower part while the rest of the body is shaped as if from a single mould. this silver sculpture appears smooth yet sharp grooves add a sense of dynamism. LED pin-stripe lights accentuate these cuts at the front and rear.

the interior is said to mirror the car’s sustainable outlook. to start with, the leather-free interior is lined with carpets fashioned from recycled fishing nets. likewise, the cabin trim will be made from reused fabrics, such as old t-shirts and other clothes. lastly, fisker has promised that large amounts of landfill waste, generated by the rubber manufacturing industry like tires, will be reused throughout. the model is set to go on sale in 2021 before full-production starts at the end of that year.

  • Hi Team,
Great car folks – a huge well done to all the thinkers and do-ers involved !

Would the solar panel technology you use here be suitable for deployment on the roof of standard shipping containers to improve the drive efficiency of the truck power unit that drives them around?

Huge market, significant global benefits, difficult engineering … but hey, you guys have made an entire world-class car!

Do have a think & let me know : )
