heritage re:coded presents tapestry of coded illusions

Stratasys and Foraeva’s 3D printed fashion collection HERITAGE RE:CODED seeks to redefine ancient tradition and crafts through technologies of today. The series serves as a poignant reminded that everything is code, presenting a tapestry of constructed illusions wherein each garment’s intricate patterns reveal a hidden miniature universe upon close inspection. What initially appear to be splendid adorning flowers are actually intricate arrangements of tiny letters, and seemingly hand-in-hand figures are revealed to be micro human forms. All are ancient motifs inspired by traditional Romanian patterns, yet self-recurring just like different generations are linked by mise-en-abime folklore codes, from hand-sewn symbols to algorithmic 3D printed concepts.

Foraeva, a design lab co-founded by fashion designer Lana Dumitru and architect Vlad Tenu, adopts an approach that blends millennia-old motifs with novel digital tools and algorithms with the help of 3D printing company Stratasys. Their HERITAGE RE:CODED collection fuses past and present, reimagining tradition and crafts of the future through the advancements of technology and computer science. Traditional Romanian patterns are decoded and reinvented through computational design, using bespoke algorithms to recreate age-old motifs, much like the passing down of sewn symbols through generations. The creative process intertwines artistry and technology, where state-of-the-art 3D printing techniques breathe life into fabric, giving birth to a new visual expression. Complex symbols, text, and figures emerge, revealing hidden meanings and narrating stories of heritage.

The exhibition was first launched at Milano Design Week and will be showcased at New York Fashion Week 2024, bringing together the final works and the concept designs to provide a glimpse into their digital evolution. This journey will additionally be visually captured through 3D-generated immersive digital fashion catwalks. ‘We come from different creative backgrounds — fashion design and architecture — and we use this to our advantage… We believe in artistic time travel, bringing past into the future, traditional craft into computational science; because, in the end, everything is code,’ notes the creative duo behind Foraeva.
