just one month after its rolex 24 win, ford is showcasing its all new GT competition series in daytona. the upgraded car sheds some serious pounds with ford using a host of weight-saving innovations such as a lightweight, race-inspired perspex engine hatch cover and carbon fiber racing stripes.
a car that has ‘racing in its blood,’ the competition series packs a 647 horsepower engine and combines lightweight features with a unique aesthetic. the upgraded model was engineered to build on the car’s innovative, aerodynamic design, and the changes see the removal of weight higher in the vehicle—shifting the center of gravity closer to the track for even better road holding. the model is fully decked out in carbon fiber, featuring a unique gloss stripe, mirror caps, A-pillars as well as an axposed carbon fiber lower body trim in a matching gloss finish.
the ride still users bulkhead gorilla glass behind the driver, yet trims it down to about half the thickness of that used on other models. the perspex engine hatch cover together with the carbon fiber prop rod also work to reduce weight in the upper-part of the vehicle and shift the balance of weight lower into the car. exposed carbon fiber also accentuates the console, registers and door sills, whilst anodized red paddle shifters and an instrument panel badge bring accent color to the cabin. a unique center console plate and steering wheel fascia account for the deleted infotainment controls and screen.
to appease the model’s existing fanbase, all performance features from the standard production car remain inclusing the FIA-certified steel role cage and active aerodynamic system. however, any items not essential to performance—such as radio and stowage bins—have been eliminated. on the inside, the same lightweight interior remains, and ebony alcantara suede is used on the seats, instrument panel and headliner. the competition series is offered in six ford GT colors. the car is set to headline ford’s large display – alongside its broader lineup – outside turn one at the daytona 500 this weekend.
