GE aviation begins testing world’s largest commercial jet engine

GE aviation has begun ground testing the ‘GE9X’ – the world’s largest commercial aircraft engine. the first full test brings all the technologies together to demonstrate their operability as a complete propulsion system.

with almost 700 engines on order, the ‘GE9X’ will be in the 100,000 pound thrust class and will have the largest front fans at 3.4 meters in diameter with 16 fourth generation carbon fiber composite fan blades. it also contains the latest low-pressure turbine module that includes 3D printed fuel nozzles and accessory drive train kit composed of the inlet gearbox, transfer gearbox and accessory gearbox.

2017 will be a busy year for the ‘GE9X’ program with the start of certification testing and flight testing for boeing’s ‘777X’ – their largest commercial aircraft with a wingspan of 71.8 meters. the engine certification is anticipated for 2018.
