general motors has unveiled two electric bicycles in what seems to be a return to the company’s beginnings. the two new electric bikes — one foldable, the other compact — are part of GM’s efforts to promote its plans for an electric future. the announcement recalls some of GM’s earliest automotive brands which started out in the 1890s as bicycle companies.

the bikes are equipped with safety features including rechargeable front and rear LED lights. the electric propulsion on the bikes has been designed by engineers at general motors who created a proprietary drive system. there isn’t much else regarding details on the releases. specs like size, weight, range, and price are all undisclosed and the company is even seeking input from consumers to help name the e-bikes.

GM is offering $10,000 for the top submission in a crowdsourcing campaign, and $1,000 each to nine runners-up. once it settles on a name, GM will say more about how much and where the bikes can be purchased. entries will be accepted until november 26. the winning submissions will be announced january 31, 2019.
