GM to put fully autonomous 'AV cruise' on the road by 2019, releases first look of interior

here’s a first look at the interior of GM’s fully autonomous ‘cruise AV.’ as you can see, no steering wheel, no pedals — just a screen to touch and a skyline to stare at. a safety petition has been filed with the department of transportation. if successful, GM’s cruise will be the first of its kind to go into production without manual controls. reassuringly, GM asks us to imagine a world without human error, harmful emissions, traffic jams, and inequality, ‘the peace of mind knowing that whatever our age, our stage of life or our physical capabilities we have the freedom to go wherever we want to go.’

the path to this divine world, free of conflict is simple. it merely requires, ‘integrating the software expertise of silicon valley with the systems safety and manufacturing expertise of detroit and our [GM’s] teams around the world. with safety at the core, we are ready to take the next step.’ 

admittedly, it’s a more assuring plan than all of the other car companies’ — if we can call them that anymore — plans to fix the world. it isn’t the prettiest vehicle, but it’s real, and if they are given the green light, they’ll be coming to a metropolitan city near you, soon. read GM’s 2018 self-driving safety report, here.
