Granstudio’s Komma compact EV

In the dynamic landscape of evolving cities, marked by rising populations and a daily rush of commuters, transportation solutions must also adapt accordingly. Responding to the shifting demands of urban mobility, Granstudio, a design firm specializing in automotive, interaction and mobility design, crafts a compact electric vehicle (EV) for Komma. This little vehicle features a patented design that combines the nimbleness and dimensions of a motorcycle with the safety and comfort associated with a standard car. With its release set for 2025, the Swiss mobility startup hopes to realize a future where cities see less congestion and pollution in favor of faster, greener travel.

Granstudio, the international mobility design agency responsible for bringing Komma (see here) to life, observed the significant raw material demands—200 tons per vehicle—of a single electric car battery. Recognizing the urgency to radically rethink mobility solutions, the project has committed to utilizing 70% fewer materials in production to minimize logistic impacts, decrease energy consumption, and reduce waste. The studio’s transdisciplinary approach, spanning user experience, urban trend identification, and automotive design, is gracefully embedded in the modern yet understated construction of the vehicle.

an agile, safety-focused EV

One of the most notable advantages to Komma is its compact size that packs in a lot of features. With two seats, it maintains a small stature while also being able to zip around with a passenger onboard. The closed version – rather than its open, doorless edition – comfortably envelopes those inside into the vehicle without the extra tonnage. Additionally, it’s built in cargo space is ample enough to transport day-to-day necessities.

When designing Komma, Granstudio combined a technology-wise and user-driven approach to ensure optimal vehicle performance and efficiency while also providing an enjoyable driving experience. With an electric drivetrain that positions the electric engines in the rear wheels, this solution not only conserves space and minimizes energy consumption but also facilitates direct and software-controlled management of driving dynamics. The entire system is powered by a versatile modular battery, offering choices between a single 7.5kWh module or a twin 15kWh module that deliver an impressive range of up to 200km. This high-efficiency design allows for charging convenience, whether through a standard power plug or a fast charger, completing the process in a matter of minutes.

Komma vehicles are never wider than a motorcycle, which leads to great agility and sets them apart from other microcars

While Komma vehicles boast a slim and agile design, safety remains a top priority to Granstudio’s design. Achieving speeds that impart a sense of security on any road, these vehicles incorporate advanced safety features such as ABS, airbags, seatbelts, and anti-collision control—embracing the latest in automotive active safety systems. Safety is not only about features but also how the vehicle moves; Komma employs a tilting system akin to a motorcycle. This design allows the vehicle to swerve effectively, while also ensuring all four tires stay firmly grounded, thereby enhancing overall control and safety.

a broader vision for a decongested urban space

Built into Komma’s vehicles is a vision to positively impact the environment and the quality of public space. Equipped with two seats, hefty safety features, and cargo capacity, this EV has great potential, not just for the private owner, but also for car rental companies and car sharing services. By contributing to existing car-sharing services, these vehicles have the potential to reduce traffic on roads. Moreover, by occupying half the footprint of traditional cars, they could play a role in decongesting the urban landscape, allowing roads to be repurposed for diverse public initiatives and events.
