created by htc for sprint, the ‘evo 3d‘ smartphone offers users the ability to create and playback 3D images and video, wrapped in the ‘htc sense’ user interface over an android OS.

the ‘evo 3D’ features a 4.3-inch 3D QHD capacitive touchscreen, capable of displaying 3D content without the need for special glasses.

a 1.3-megapixel front camera facilitates social networking and video streaming, while dual 5-megapixel cameras on the device’s back together capture 3D images and HD video: 2D video at 1080p and 3D video at 720p. all 3D media content, created on the device or downloaded, can be output to compatible TVs using HDMI or DLNA.

the phone runs ‘htc sense’ over android 2.3 (gingerbread)

at 5 x 2.6 x 0.5 inches and weighing 6 ounces (170g), the ‘htc evo 3D’ is slightly smaller than its predecessor (the htc ‘evo’, covered in this 2010 designboom article). the device runs ‘htc sense’ over android 2.3 on a dual-core snapdragon processor, featuring 1GB RAM with a built-in 4GB of internal memory, expandable to up to 32GB with microSD card.

4G-ready, the phone’s mobile hotspot capabilities support up to eight wifi devices simultaneously.

the camera’s rear features two 5-megapixel cameras for shooting HD video

the google mobile services standard to the phone include the ‘google goggles’ photo-based search, alongside sprint sports applications, 3D blockbuster ondemand, and the normal android marketplace.

the system’s user interface features a full carousel menu, rather than the linear set of panels offered by most current android interfaces to date. the device also offers visual voicemail.

the ‘htc evo 3d’ is expected to be available in america in the summer of 2011, with pricing information to be announced closer to the release date.
