at an exclusive event in munich, designboom witnessed the unveiling of the huawei ‘mate 10’ and the super-sleek ‘porsche design huawei mate 10’, and took away a ‘mate 10 pro’ to trial.

‘the huawei mate 10 series introduces the first mobile AI-specific neural network processing unit, launching a new era of intelligent smartphones,’ claims richard yu, CEO, huawei consumer business group, and he is right. their kirin 970 octo-core processor, which is entirely made in-house, is more powerful and more efficient than previous generations. in fact, it provides 25 times more power and 50 times more energy efficiency than ever before. this means that the neural network processing unit delivers all actions in super fast speed, learning and predicting which applications will be activated and when.

battery life is always a consumer frustration and one of those modern day problems. however, its advanced AI technology aids the impressive performance of its 4000 mAh high-density battery. even with non-stop and high intensity actions, the hauwei ‘mate 10 pro’ excels for 50 hours of life thanks to its smart battery management system that intelligently maximizes resources. furthermore, it enhances the world’s first fast charging technology to power up from 1% to 20% in 20 minutes, and from 1% to 60% in 30 minutes.

the smartphone’s intelligence system further benefits the camera set, enabling fast but pure image capturing and editing. featuring the third generation of leica-branded dual cameras, the ‘mate 10 pro’ boasts a rear 12MP color camera with optical image stablization, 20MP monochrome, and an 8MP front-facing camera. both with fast f/1.6 lenses, the cameras once again sets a new standard for mobile image capturing. its AI processor also enables the boosting of detail and light in color scenes, as well as editing modes from lighting painting to 3D panorama.

all this advanced and leading mobile technology is encapsulated in a sleek design that is covered in super polished glass. the front is liberated from manual buttons, displaying an almost edge-to-edge screen. the 6-inch full HD+ OLED screen delivers vivid colors, pure blackness and wide viewing angles. surrounding this, on its side a thin metal band acts as a frame and a bridge to the multi-axis, curved glass of its rear.

in a lighter shade, a strip highlights the dual camera, as well as the fingerprint scanner below. this sculptured back provides a solid and ergonomically sound shape that fits comfortably in the hand. at 154.2 x 74.5 x 7.9 mm in dimension, as well as 178g in weight, the smartphone is as lightweight as its lightening speed performance.
