jaguar land rover finds and restores original 4x4 that was missing for over 60 years

at the 1948 amsterdam motor show, three pre-production prototypes were shown. one of them, bought in the 60s, spent decades corroding in a welsh field and decades more aging in a garden, the way beautiful machinery often does. but now, 70 years later, after months of researching archives, experts at jaguar land rover classic have confirmed — the galvanized chassis, the removable rear tub, thicker aluminum alloy body panels — it’s her. jaguar land rover will mark its 70th anniversary with a series of events and celebrations in 2018, beginning with the restoration of this lost vehicle that started it all.

according to tim hannig, jaguar land rover classic director, ‘this land rover is an irreplaceable piece of world automotive history and is as historically important as ‘huey’, the first pre-production land rover. beginning its sympathetic restoration here at classic works, where we can ensure it’s put back together precisely as it’s meant to be, is a fitting way to start land rover’s 70th anniversary year.’ follow the full story on instagram @landroverukpr.

  • My all time favourite vehicles were my early model landrovers . A 1961 SWB Soft top I brought for $1250 in the early 70’s and a 1970 SWB Safari which was near new when I got it. I should never have sold either of those. They were economic to run and absolutely reliable.

    Bruce Jarrett says:
  • It would be a delight to seen it back on the road.
On the other hand, be as sympathetic as you like but I find it difficult to believe that the restoration would come close to the patina and gravitas of this Landy – sadly it looks as though its narrative will be erased in favour of having another shiny thing 🙁

    Adam Brocklehurst says:
  • I had a nightmare last night that the reason for Land Rover’s interest in this old gem was to use is as a spring board for the design team to produce a cute retro Landy, along the lines of Mini, and the VW bug / combo (please don’t do it Land Rover).
On the other hand a back to basics ute may have some legs . . .

    Adam Brocklehurst says:
  • Remins me of my grandaddy’s axe. Its over a hundred years old, l only had to replace the head once and the handle twice.
