called mosaic, german industrial designer louis berger conceptualizes a modular camera for smartphones like the iphone. it rethinks one of the most important aspects of these devices – their multi-megapixel cameras – as if it were detachable, much like the forgotten google ara. this enables the camera-cum-display to be more than just a simple smartwatch but also a gopro-styled clip-on that adapts to all life activities, from social calls to extreme sports.

with a minimal aesthetic like the iphone – just take a look at the volume buttons on its side for example – louis berger’s mosaic focuses on a small ‘photo tile’ that can be used as a stand-alone device. it features one side with three cameras, a microphone and small screen, and a larger display on the reverse side. the compact screen is big enough to function with apps, showcase media, and communicate with a keyboard and emojis.

when docked into the larger display, the device functions like a regular smartphone

mosaic can be docked into a selection of add-ons. this includes a large and small display tile: the larger one offers a more conventional smartphone experience with its size and ability to charge; the small tile can be worn around the neck or strapped to the wrist as if a gopro or smartwatch for tracking and capturing activities. a magnetic grip on its back enables the device to be clipped to clothes.
