mag-lev audio creates the world's first levitating turntable

vinyl is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity, but there are plenty of people who still see the turntable as dated technology.

while that may be the case for some music systems, it’s far from the case with the mag-lev audio ‘levitating turntable’, a gravity-defying record player that is currently seeking funding on kickstarter. the first ‘levitating turntable’ visually enhances the experience of listening to vinyl records by levitating the platter, thus creating a turntable of the future for the medium of the past.

the first levitating turntable

mag-lev audio searched for a way for people to have a better, newer way to experience vinyl records. by pushing the frontier of audio technology, it was able to integrate the uplifting experience of music into the turntable design itself, bringing the feeling of zero gravity into the living room. the first ‘levitating turntable’ is designed for people who appreciate high quality sound and innovative design. it includes built-in feet that the platter rests on when not in use, but these retract while the turntable is operating, giving it a truly futuristic appearance. it comes with a pre-fitted tonearm and cartridge, which provides a phono-in connection. pick a favorite record; turn the turntable on; move the tone arm into position; and lower the cueing lever; then let the smart-record player do the rest.

subtle orange lighting gives the turntable a sleek, futuristic feel, and further enhances the visual effects of levitation even when the lights are off. the drive system in this turntable is where all the magic is. it is completely different than anything else on the market. by using patented technology, the slovenian audio team was able to achieve not only magnetic levitation, but also maintain the incredibly precise turning of the platter with sensor regulating software. air is the smoothest medium with least amount of friction, which further elevates this project into a truly unique listening experience.

to prevent accidents happening in the event of a power outage, the record player was designed with a UPS system. this solution stores enough power to safely lift the tonearm; stop the record; and return the platter feet to resting position. this way both the ‘levitating turntable’ and record remain in perfect condition even when the unexpected happens.

  • Extremely cooool…but I would use more light under the table to make it more visible for everyone. I’m shure that 90% of random bypassers would not take a glimpse under the table and will not see the point.

    Dirk says:
  • A far more interesting proposition than the ‘seed’ turntable (is this a Pro-Ject deck?) which deserves a better chance of success just for innovation alone but I’d have to hear one working before I invested any money in it.
