MINI has pulled the covers off the top-of-the-line john cooper works model, fitted with the company’s most powerful engine ever installed in a production model. the latest ‘top athlete’ in the brand’s line of hatchbacks integrates a newly refined suspension system and model-specific design features. powered by a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine based on the latest generation of power units with MINI ‘twinpower turbo technology’ from BMW, it generates a maximum output of 231 horsepower and a maximum torque of 320 Nm, sending the MINI john cooper works from a standstill to 100 km/h (62mph) in just 6.3 seconds.

power transmission to the front wheels are delivered via a 6-speed manual transmission. the gearbox has been completely redone for the latest generation JCW, characterized by low weight, short shift travel and optimized acoustic and vibrational characteristics. a gear sensor allows active engine speed adaptation, meaning that during gear shifts, the engine speed can be automatically matched to the RPM. this ensures jerk-free clutch engagement, enhancing comfort when down shifting.

the body is based on the new MINI cooper – the front section boasts larger air inlets and features a model-specific cooling concept comprising additional air inlets in the outer areas of the front apron. these details are placed where the MINI fog lamps used to be, to guarantee an air supply to additional external cooling units that regulate the temperature level of the brake system. the hexagonal radiator grille at the center of the front section also has a characteristic honeycomb pattern and a cross member at the bottom edge finished in red. LED headlamps are surrounded by a daytime driving light ring also in LED technology, with the lower section in white acting as the direction indicator.

precisely shaped air ducting elements in the lower section of the front apron help optimize the car’s aerodynamic properties as do the side sills. the distinctive shape of the rear spoiler fitted on the new MINI john cooper works was applied to generate additional downthrust at high speeds. the rear apron with flaps and a diffuser element in the lower area likewise helps maximize aerodynamic balance.
