engineering student, philip frenzel, has invented a mobile airbag to ease the heart-stopping moment your smartphone is hurtling towards the floor. the design comprises a thin protective case that uses sensors to deploy metal springs whilst free falling. the metal springs can then be reinserted into the case and reused.

recently spotted on reddit, frenzel’s invention recently won germany’s mechatronic prize for 2018. the aalen university student plans to launch a kickstarter for the project in next month. you can see frenzel explain the idea in a video published by the german society above. for more on frenzel’s innovative ‘mobile airbag,’ see here.
