moi composites’ mambo – the world’s first 3D-printed fiberglass boat – is set to debut at the genoa boat show from october 1-6, 2020. although its catchy name, mambo, stands for a less-than-catchy acronym, motor additive manufacturing boat, the lightweight and performance-optimized water vehicle is highly anticipated.

moi composites’ mambo debuts a patented 3D-printing technology, called continuous fiber manufacturing, that digitally crafted its full form. the system is capable of depositing continuous fibers with thermosetting resin. robots expertly follow the generative algorithm set.

measuring 6.5m long and 2.5m wide, the result reveals a new uniquely-shaped boat. the hull resembles an inverted tricycle where organic forms seem to chase each other before transforming into structural and functional elements. a sleek, shiny coat of snapper rocks blue colored paint then adorns the finished design, which dazzles above the water’s surface.

mambo’s strong, ultra-durable and lightweight body has a dry weight of just 800kg. it is then equipped with a real navigation system, 115cv engine, cork flooring and white leather seating to finish.

we participated in the genoa boat show in 2017, and it was during this event that we came up with the idea of making mambo. we saw the project take shape first, then brought it to life, and finally mambo arrived today at the sea. we have 3D-printed a boat, enhancing the concept of customization with a one-of-a-kind design created and tailored from the owner’s mind, to give everyone the opportunity to understand and experience the sea in their own way. all this would not have happened without the support of our partners, who believed with us in this ambitious project, concludes gabriele natale, CEO & co-founder of moi composites.
