yacht intelligence, ken freivokh design, genesis technologies and IMAX collaborate to develop the ‘nemo room’, a private theater that is a first for on-board superyacht cinema experience. the theater will not only be used to watch current blockbuster releases but will also project live underwater CCTV images from outside the yacht onto the walls inside. it will be designed to entertain the owner’s family and guests in many ways, so will also be used for blu-ray, streaming live content, gaming and video conferencing.

the ‘nemo room’ will facilitate on an upcoming project from ken freivokh design – a new 150m superyacht, who’s client is happy to try the novel idea.

ken freivokh said, ‘we always strive to be very innovative. we work to evoke an exclusive feeling by developing uncommon spaces that are fundamentally spectacular. the first IMAX cinema on a yacht will be just that!’

the project parameters for the IMAX private auditorium are being pushed to the limits as the design team are working within the unusual space of a hull. the restricted area is being constructed so that the client will enter the room via sliding walls instead of doors. this creates a seamless surround screen and completes the famous IMAX immersive effect.

the technology itself is also a difficulty to install as each system has an unique image enhancer that uses a camera to read the picture on the screen and feeds this back to the projector. this enables real-time adjustments to ensure that the on-screen image is perfect.  as well, file sizes for IMAX movies are huge, ranging up to 60GB and would take an average client four hours with a 10-20Mbps bandwidth, to download. this will be a success factor for the project so a very-small-aperture terminal (VSAT) will start the download on-board overnight to solve the problem.

alan bernardi, founder and managing director of yacht intelligence commented, ‘with IMAX’s strict parameters and incredibly specific technological requirements, our first challenge was to persuade them to take us seriously, and prove that it would be possible to create a truly unique private theatre on a superyacht.’

he continued to say, ‘this collaborative process between ken freivokh design, IMAX, genesis technologies and us is creating something truly unique to the superyacht market. working with such an innovative group of people to come up with something this spectacular is an absolute pleasure, and a collaboration we look forward to continuing with future projects.’
