O-Boy smartwatch sends emergency alerts via satellite

O-Boy is a satellite-based emergency smartwatch developed by the Brussels design studio Futurewave. The device is designed for situations in which mobile phone networks are unavailable, allowing users to transmit emergency alerts through satellite communication. The project combines industrial design, antenna engineering, and embedded systems within a wearable format intended for use in remote environments.

The concept addresses the limitations of conventional mobile networks, which cover only part of the Earth’s surface. In remote locations such as mountains, open water, or isolated work sites, access to communication infrastructure can be limited or absent. To respond to this condition, Futurewave assembled a multidisciplinary team of product designers, electronics engineers, and antenna specialists to develop a device capable of operating independently from terrestrial networks. Instead of relying on smartphones or local signal coverage, the watch communicates directly with satellite systems to transmit emergency signals globally.

The design process involved integrating satellite communication hardware into a compact wrist-worn object. The device was developed to meet performance requirements such as water resistance, pressure tolerance, and impact protection while maintaining proportions suitable for everyday wear. Its form features rounded surfaces intended to improve comfort on the wrist while accommodating internal technical components.

Futurewave merges satellite technology with wearable design

The visual identity of the watch is defined by a black and red color palette that references safety equipment and emergency signaling. This graphic language communicates the device’s functional purpose while maintaining a clear and legible appearance. To support the integration of satellite technology within a wearable product, a dedicated assembly and production strategy was developed by Futurewave design studio. This process addressed the spatial and technical constraints associated with antenna placement, electronic components, and structural protection within a compact enclosure.

During development, Futurewave produced a full-scale prototype using pre-industrialization materials to evaluate the structural configuration and technical systems. The prototype phase informed the selection of manufacturing solutions for integrating satellite communication hardware into the final product architecture. O-Boy demonstrates how industrial design and engineering can be combined to develop communication devices intended for use beyond conventional infrastructure, extending emergency connectivity to remote environments.
