meet ray, a smart baby monitor that tracks breathing + sleeping

shaped like a child’s wooden toy, ray is a smart baby monitor by hong-kong based office for product design that captures and stores the toddler’s activities. from sleep and creating patterns, to unforgettable souvenirs, this device provides a detailed feedback and early warning signs.

referencing classic wooden toys, the smart baby monitor has a warm and friendly character

unlike typical monitors that can register the baby’s activity from afar, office for product design’s ray device is paired with wifi, bluetooth and GSM — allowing parents and caretakers to safely keep an eye on the child wherever they are. unlike typical wearables that look like webcams or CCTVS,  the product also takes on a fundamentally different design. to shift the focus away from the technology itself, ray is conceived to fit into the context of a child’s room by using wood and delicate shapes. by doing so, a warm and friendly character is given to the monitor — like a small guardian that can be placed on the bedside table or shelf to peer into the cot.

ray is designed to fit into the context of the child’s environment

the baby monitor is developed by start-up company ray IoT solutions, alongside johnson & johnson and the HAX hardware accelerator program based in san francisco and shenzen. it features a sensitive microphone, speaker, low light video camera and an advanced micropower ultra-wideband radar sensor that measures body movement and respiratory rate from a distance — even through a duvet in the dark. besides general presence and sleep tracking, the hospital-grade sensor can also detect irregularities like fever, asthma or bronchitis, as well as acute conditions that may lead to accidental suffocation.

ray baby monitor is also available for pre-orders on kickstarter.

ray enables non-contact sleep and respiration tracking for babies

the pivoting head not only enables the video camera and sensors to face the baby, but also lends ray a personality

ray can be wall mounted with a simple fixture

the wall mounting fixtures also help keep the power cable out of the baby’s reach

ray can easily be placed on a nearby table or shelf to peer into the baby’s cot

ray will be available in three primary colours
