pierpaolo lazzarini envisions 'flying' superyacht powered by hydrogen

discover pierpaolo lazzirini’s foiling superyacht, ‘plectrum’

Pierpaolo Lazzarini shares his vision for ‘Plectrum,’ a 74-meter-long superyachtwith carbon fiber and powered by a unique foiling system. Designed to be the fastest of its kind, the water vehicle takes inspiration from America’s latest cup sailboats (Prada’s 2023 model) — but instead of being pushed by the wind, the ‘Plectrum’ moves and lifts itself above the water surface before speeding off into the distance at up to 75 knots. The superyacht runs on three hydrogen-powered motors (fuel cells), 5000hp each (15,000 hp in total).

a flexible, adjustable, and lightweight design

Lazzarini (see more here) imagined the foil system to be adjustable depending on cruising needs, with a width that varies between 15 (closed foil when the yacht is berthed/anchored) and 20 meters (open foil +2.5 meters x side, while the yacht is sailing at high speed). Such a flexible system creates ‘a different super yacht configuration which will allow much faster sea traveling than conventional similar size ships,’ notes the designer.

Conceived to be built entirely out of dry carbon fiber composite materials, the super light ‘Plectrum’ features four levels, with a main body offering six-guest cabins and a shipowner suite. The yacht also includes a helicopter hangar, a central garage for two tenders, and a rear garage for water ‘toys’ and a car. The superyacht is expected to launch in 2025.
