french company posytec has just patented posyte, a polystyrene-based construction material made from oil waste offering innovative solutions in the field of construction with very interesting development prospects. these new blocks of expanded polystyrene will allow individuals to build zero energy homes in a LEGO-like way in little time.

‘the walls of a 100m2 house can be assembled in three to four ours with posytec,’ explains fabrice badin, posytec CEO. ‘there is no cutting to do and very little amount of concrete used.’

posyte is a high-thermal performance material ideal for passive houses. made of EPS (semi-expanded polystyrene), this material can be used to create complete wall sections which are hollowed out. it benefits from high resistance as it has a great capacity to absorb shocks and is completely water resistant. it also benefits from a neutral PH and withstands to UV rays, earthquakes, water and overall, it’s very insulating. when it comes to fire threats, posyte will melt but will not release toxic vapors. of course, once trapped between the plasterboard and the exterior plaster, the polystyrene is neutralized.

generally non-biodegradable, polystyrene is often seen bad for the environment, even if it has some benefits like its inability to contaminate water or air with gases. the advantage of using posyte is not the material itself but the qualities it contributes. for example, and most importantly, houses built with this material won’t need heating or air conditioning as the temperature inside will always remain the same, and in the long term, this is sustainable.

as for the price, it costs about €1,500 per square meter. the company will only deliver the product but does not do the construction so get ready to get hands on.
