project iris

project iris is an interactive light installation jointly produced by the university of saarbrücken, germany and university of munich, germany for the ars electronica festival in linz, austria. the design allows people walking by the ars electronica building to literally paint with light on the façade  using their  mobile phones. after loading the application, users can select colours and draw over the image of the building shown on their phone’s camera. this instantly triggers the lights on the faced to change colour accordingly. the system can also be used to play games, including a jigsaw puzzle.
