meet W2’s romotow trailer, a modern caravan intervention

Creative camping or glamping is an emerging trend in the recent years that requires manufacturers to be more and more inventive. New Zealand-based architecture and design firm W2 has raised the bar considerably with their Romotow, an elegant trailer that swings out to create a spacious elevated deck, just at the push of a button.

This ambitious concept was created on paper in 2012 as a futuristic idea, almost unattainable at that time. However, six years later, in 2018, the first renders were revealed (see our previous article here), and today, this promising concept is down on its way to the market, with a design that stayed as aerodynamic and special as the initial sketches.

It needs only some seconds for the sleek rotatable trailer to transform into a glamping RV. With an automatic hydraulic mechanism, the inner section of the camper rotates 90 degrees and uncovers an L-shaped scheme. The main cabin measures around nine meters, while the revealed deck extends the total floor space by 70%. The U-shaped wall accommodates a fold-down table or bench seat, enhancing the mobile living experience.

a futuristic & roomy interior for outdoor adventures

When the design team at W2 (see more here) first came up with the rotatable trailer concept, they were inspired by the same logic a USB flash drive swings out of its covering. Materialized into a bigger scale project, the Romotow (more here) brags its pearl white body that can effortlessly swing outwards to welcome a perfect party deck. In the intersection between the art of a vehicle and a tiny home, the foldable body is the answer to the boxy and cumbersome trailer concepts currently on the market, introducing a two-part living area.

The expanding aerodynamic design gives the vehicle a quick and easy transition between a camp and a travel mode. When close, it spans 9.3 meters in length and 2.5 in width, with a total floor area of 29 sqm. The interior sees a minimalistic yet luxurious design, with curved ends that spark a futuristic sensation. The project can comfortably sleep four people, with two bedrooms separated by a bathroom and a customizable kitchenette.

The front sleeping area, with a slide-away bed, can double as a living room with a dining table. This room features a curved opening that follows the aerodynamic silhouette of the vehicle, providing users with unobstructed vistas. The other sleeping space is positioned on the back end, comprising a large circular aperture with internal shutters, relishing beautiful views of the surroundings. A large wardrobe and small built-in drawers offer plenty of storage, providing home comfort outdoors.

The cabin has an aluminum exterior with insulated composite walls, flooring, and roofing. Entertainment options like a pop-up or wall-mounted smart TV, reversing camera, fusion sound system, and exterior projector are up to the buyer’s choice and needs.

Power is harvested from a 395 W solar panel mounted on the roof and a 200-Ah lithium battery. Customers can also add more battery capacity, solar panels, and an inverter. Constructed by ACM Motorhomes, the Romotow is now available for sale and starts at a price of US$268,000.
