senticnel is a wireless tree alarm designed to prevent forest fires
designed by eli-gutierrez studio, the sensors not only detect the start of a blaze, they also predict the most likely path a fire will take.
prefer designboom on googleeli-gutierrez studio has designed a tool to help fight and prevent forest fires. ‘senticnel V.2’ is a wireless alarm system comprised of small, tree-mounted sensors. these sensors are devised to alert local authorities to the location of a fire and predict its path, meaning emergency services will be better equipped to tackle any spreading blaze. the system has been developed in spain alongside forestry company, NTFOREST.

the sensor system is designed around modularity, efficiency, and economy. thanks to a flexible implementation, the senticnel V.2 could adapt to other locations. the technology behind the devices utilizes layered land modeling. an area of land is modeled in detail to include any features that could play an essential role in preventing forest fires such as geomorphology, vegetation, infrastructure, and relevant equipment.

the devices are physically installed onto trees to create a network of sensors. information is then collected by the sensors in real-time to be processed, analyzed and monitored by local authorities. among other factors, they monitor temperature, humidity, radiation, wind speed, and wind direction.

the sensors relay information
when a fire is detected, the senticnel V.2 sends alerts to the emergency services by email and SMS. using fire-growth simulation software farsite, the system also models the most likely path the fire will take. this allows fire crews to optimize their firefighting efforts and for people in nearby residential areas to be evacuated to safety.
