‘the new sporty concept #1 is a redefinition of the smart brand in a very cool grown-up way,’ says gordon wagener, chief design officer daimler group. ‘we have created a completely new design DNA that has the potential to establish smart as the leading design brand.’

in typical fashion, the smart concept #1 is sized in a compact form despite growing into the four-door SUV segment. its balanced proportions detail powerfully sculptured surfaces together with usual short overhangs at the front and rear. at both ends, innovative LED light strips perform functional yet highly experiential rhythmic light shows. a large panoramic glass roof seamlessly transitions into the windscreen and window surfaces of the frameless doors. this gives a visual lightness as if the roof is floating.

the SUV’s rear doors are hinged at the back and open in the opposite direction to the front. these portal doors not only make it easy for passengers to climb in and out, but also removes the need for a B-pillar and creates a more spacious, light-filled cabin. the wheels are positioned as far out towards the corners as possible to further maximize internal space as possible. it is said to offer leg and elbow room on par with higher segments.

inside, the cabin has a lounge-like feel not only thanks to it surprising roominess and smart use of glass. sophisticated details include ambient lighting embedded into the floor as well as the elegant air vents seemingly inspired by mercedes-benz’s own designs. the highlight is the center console that floats between the front seats. it merges with the unique dashboard design, where the free-standing, 12.8-inch 3D touchscreen doubles as the central control element. the interface has a unique, particularly user-friendly design. a 3D globe serves as the central menu item as an artificial avatar helps users navigate, especially as it learns from user behavior.
