smart escooter

smart has been developing an all electric scooter concept for this year’s paris motorshow. the smart escooter is similar to its future mini built rival with a rear hub mounted electric motor, a lithium-ion battery system, regenerative braking and a top speed of 28mph.

a design feature of the smart scooter is the central console which uses an iphone 4 as the primary instrument cluster, to provide users with GPS as well as more than enough computing power to manage the scooters onboard systems. the only potential drawbacks are weather proofing (you can’t ride in the rain with an exposed iphone) and the inability to use a blackberry, nokia or non-apple branded phone.

the escooter is powered by a 4kw (5.36 horsepower) electric motor. the battery system will be able to charge from 0-100% in 3-5 hours from a standard 220v outlet.

  • Because electronics change form on a very short cycle, is it wise tying a vehicle design to a specific model? The iPhone port should be designed as a connection port so that future electronic models can be connected through a common port system, such as a usb port and and an electronic unit adapter tray. They could even us an iPad as a pseudo-dash, though it might be a bit big.

Also, the water problem could be solved with a clear cover – similar to a dash board cover, which could flip down from the windshield… almost like a double layered windshield in good weather and a wind-shield/dash cover in bad weather.

Other then that, I think it is beautiful design and can’t wait to get one.
