transparent sound releases colossal speaker forged from repurposed steel

earlier this year, stockholm-based audio company transparent sound released its transparent speaker, a ‘seethrough’ device stripped of its essential elements. built from one aluminium uniframe and tempered glass panels, the speaker was geared towards minimalist music aficionados. now, in a complete turnaround, the company has released a very solid steel speaker.

the speaker was handcrafted by master blacksmith jonas majors at his workshop in mörkö, an island south of stockholm. he repurposed discarded raw metal, forged it and welded it, before polishing and blackening it to give the appearance of aged steel.

‘transparent sound appreciate the raw metal texture of aged steel, and in this collection jonas will actually find and repurpose material from various sources,’ the company explains. ‘this is a raw piece of handcraft merging with modern technology.’

the speaker combines 44lbs of steel with 3″ full-range drivers, a 6.5″ woofer and a built-in 100W class D amplifier. it also features bluetooth connectivity making it compatible with smartphones, computers and tablets, as well as apple airplay, sonos, amazon echo or google chromecast. dual 3.5mm inputs and a USB port offer cable connectivity.

transparent sound wanted to reinvent the traditional ‘black box’ approach by creating something sculptural instead. the company has made only 10 limited edition pieces, with each speaker authenticated with a unique number.

the steel speaker is part of transparent sound’s new upcrafted collection. the line consists of three handmade speakers, each built from upcycled materials, including wood, steel and stone. wood and stone pieces are priced at $1,650 USD and the steel speaker is listed at $2,750 USD.
