suntoucher solar powered aircraft concept by samuel nicz

‘suntoucher’ by samuel nicz

the ‘suntoucher’ is a two-seater aircraft concept which has the capability of flying for several hundred miles without fuel. developed by samuel nicz, it uses solar energy collected from the photovoltaic cells installed across its large wingspan of 70m to power its AC engine, which is situated in the middle of the glider’s fuselage. the lightweight construction is designed to be environmentally friendly, and economically fly over long distances, at an average speed of 100 km/h.

  • I’m not sure this thing looks like it would actually fly, much less with the second prop behind the first…

    henz says:
  • Where is the landing gear?

    Denis Caraire says:
  • Wait what? Henz, second prop behind the first? It only has one prop… About the landing gear I assume the propeller folds flat before touching the ground, most of these gliders dont need the engine running to land.

    what? says:
  • Landing is only the last part of the mission…Takeoffs are a bit nonexistent with no prop and with no external launch system. If you need external launch system, at the end of those several hundred mile trips, you will need to have a support crew. Landing gear is necessary if this is going to be more than a novelty. Great concept and it is great to dream. As a former Cirrus engineer, dreaming is the first part of the equation.
