designboom was recently invited to maranello, to drive the 2013 ferrari FF (otherwise known as the ferrari four); the first ever prancing horse with four-wheel drive and four comfortable seats. originally unveiled at the 81st geneva international motor show, the FF presents a completely new take on the GT sports car with a unique shooting brake design that fuses extreme sports car performance with the versatility and usability of a spacious family vehicle. in this three part series, designboom will cover an overview of the FF with a behind the scenes look into the manufacturing process and an exclusive visit to ferrari’s tailor made division.

the FF presents a completely new take on GT sports cars

styled by pininfarina, the FF is the first V12 ferrari to boast a rear-mounted seven-speed F1 dual-clutch gearbox, unleashing 651 horsepower and 504 lb-ft. of torque from its direct-injected 6.3-liter engine. conceived as a replacement for the 612 scaglietti, the FF launches from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 11 seconds before maxing out at a top speed of 335 km/h.

in addition of being capable of handling snow and extreme road conditions, the FF provides exceptional performance on various terrains – both wet or dry – with very low grip coefficients, thanks to ferrari’s 4RM four-wheel drive system. the clever engineering development still delivers torque to the rear, but in cases of loss of traction, the PTU (power transfer unit) sends up to 30% of power to the front wheels. the addition of dynamic vehicle controls such as an ‘E-diff’, ‘F1-trac’ and PTU have all been integrated into a single CPU which intelligently distributes torque to each of the four wheels individually.
