mur mur generates sound from an autonomous digital world where weather, animals, and objects continuously interact.

mur mur replaces playlists with a world that never repeats

What if ambient audio didn’t come from an endless library of recordings, but from a place that actually exists, albeit a simulated one? That question sits at the center of mur mur, a 3D printed prototype speaker developed by oio and mattering that treats sound generation as worldbuilding. Users listen to the everyday life of a miniature ecosystem inhabited by hundreds of autonomous digital agents who interact continuously, whether anyone is listening or not.

The project proposes a different model for ambient technology, running a persistent simulation complete with terrain, weather systems, living creatures, and environmental events. Birds forage, frogs call, streams flow, pedestrians move through streets, and changing weather influences how these inhabitants behave. Every interaction is translated into sound in real time, producing an evolving soundscape that never exactly repeats. The device borrows ideas from ecology, game design, agent-based simulation, and generative music to ask whether digital products can become places instead of interfaces.

three ecosystems, each with its own society

Each mur mur contains one of three distinct environments. Block recreates a miniature urban neighborhood populated by pigeons, delivery robots, traffic, commuters, and street musicians. Plot shifts to a forest inhabited by birds, hikers, insects, and changing weather. Pond focuses on aquatic life, where fish, frogs, ducks, insects, and passing boats generate quieter, fluid soundscapes.

These environments continue no matter who is listening. The device does not wait for interaction before producing events. Users occasionally tune in to discover what is already happening inside. Weather cycles alter activity levels, while individual agents follow their own rules and rhythms, creating unexpected encounters that appear in an accompanying event log. The interface reveals animals, objects, weather conditions, and recent events as they occur, allowing listeners to observe the relationships producing the sounds they hear.

an ambient instrument rather than a smart speaker

mur mur resembles a compact portable speaker with softly rounded geometry, perforated surfaces, and oversized controls that distinguish each ecosystem through color. The prototype is 3D printed, with interchangeable versions ranging from desktop speakers to keychain-sized companions intended to accompany users outdoors.

The design avoids the visual language of contemporary smart speakers, with their hidden microphones, touch-sensitive surfaces, and seamless enclosures. Instead, mur mur foregrounds its physical controls and embraces a playful objecthood. A message molded into its underside reads: ‘Do not shake too hard, living agents are inside.’ The joke reinforces the central fiction that the speaker contains an ecosystem deserving care and not just a collection of audio files.

building worlds instead of prompting AI

While mur mur inevitably enters conversations surrounding generative AI, its creators position the project against the dominant prompt-based model, constructing autonomous systems whose complexity produces variation naturally over time.

This distinction aligns mur mur with a longer lineage of generative art and simulation, where simple behavioral rules give rise to complex, emergent outcomes. Here, the emphasis shifts from producing endless content toward designing relationships between agents, environments, weather, and sound. The result feels closer to maintaining a living terrarium than operating a music player.

As AI-generated media increasingly favors instant responsiveness, mur mur instead rewards patience. Nothing happens on demand; instead, listeners encounter whatever state the world has reached when they arrive.

Currently a working prototype, mur mur exists as an ongoing collaboration between oio and mattering, who are seeking musicians, technologists, and hardware partners to help develop the project into a commercial product. Whether it ultimately reaches production or remains an experimental artifact, the project raises an increasingly relevant question for design: as digital objects become more intelligent, should they merely respond to us—or should they be allowed to develop lives of their own?
