at the north american international auto show, toyota unveiled the ‘FT-1 concept’, (FT standing for ‘future toyota’) a track-focused performance sports car developed by CALTY design research, toyota’s north american design branch. capturing design elements expected in future toyota vehicles designs, the FT-1 concept was heavily influenced by classic toyota sports cars, building upon the japanese car maker’s coupe heritage that dates back to the 2000GT, celica, supra, MR2 and FT-86.

‘the FT-1 is a dream-project for a designer and car enthusiast like myself,’ explains alex shen, calty’s studio chief designer. ‘our team was heavily influenced by toyota’s sports car past, especially celica and supra, and we sought to capture some of that history.’

the ‘FT-1 concept’ design language incorporates a plethora of curved, expressive body forms seemingly shaped by the wind; inlets, air ducts, and vent features help reinforce its aggressive track stance with airflow management and highly aerodynamic elements.
