toyota has revealed a new range of six electric cars that it plans to launch over the next five years. it forms part of the automakers plan to accelerate its roadmap for EVs by 2025 and keep up with the rapidly increasing industry.

during a briefing with the press this week, toyota executive vice president shigeki terashi gave a talk titled ‘aiming to popularize bevs’. during the presentation, he detailed toyota’s goals for fully-electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid vehicles along with new urban transportation in japan this week, including new partnerships that it hopes will make electrification more affordable.

one of the six new electrics the compact crossover toyota and subaru recently announced that they’ll jointly develop. toyota said that the platform beneath that vehicle will be adapted for the other five EVs, an architecture it is calling ‘e-TNGA’.

‘much work lies ahead to achieve the popularization of bevs. specifically, we will be focusing on vehicle development and the stable supply, improved durability, and reuse of batteries,’ toyota says. ‘we are steadily preparing a framework to respond thoroughly to the challenge, putting all the pieces in place, including the creation of new business models. working in an extensive and open manner, we are collaborating with partners as we strive to contribute to a better society.’

toyota executive vice president shigeki terashi said that the automaker plans for half of its global sales to be electrified vehicles by 2025 – 5 years ahead of previous plans. it also wants to have at least 10 models available globally from 2020, including compact cars, medium-sized crossovers and sedans, and various sizes of suv and minivan. for more information see the full presentation below.
