A Clear Resin Phone Case Embeds a Vertical Terrarium

The Terrarium Phone Case, developed by Daniel Idle, integrates a planted environment into the structure of a smartphone accessory. Designed for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the project incorporates soil, moss, and small-scale vegetation within a transparent enclosure, positioning the device as both a functional object and a contained ecological system.

The case is developed through 3D modeling and fabricated in clear resin, allowing visibility of the internal composition. A vertical terrarium is embedded within the structure, using a stabilised soil substrate that maintains the arrangement of materials during handling. This configuration enables the phone to be used, moved, and rotated without disturbing the planted environment.

A Closed-Loop Planting System Integrated into a Phone Case

The planting system focuses on mosses and species suited to enclosed conditions. The internal environment operates through a closed cycle in which moisture circulates via evaporation and condensation, while plant growth is supported by light exposure and gradual nutrient breakdown within the substrate.

The project, conceived by designer Daniel Idle, redefines the role of the phone case as a structural container for a self-contained living system, integrating biological processes into an everyday object.
