with a simple tap and short verification process, apple’s CarKey can wirelessly unlock your vehicle. it was announced that BMW will become the first carmaker to enable customers to use their iphone as a digital car key. this builds upon the success of the apple wallet, where CarKey can now be paired and stored securely via a setup in BMW’s smartphone app. the car owner can share virtual keys with up to five friends via imessage and can even configure access options for young drives, which restricts top speed, horsepower, maximum radio volume and more.

apple’s CarKey works through three simple steps: firstly, your iphone and car need to be paired; once completed, hold the device near the car’s door handle and double tap; an authentication process – through face ID or touch ID – will then unlock the doors. as long as the are manufactured after july 1 2020, CarKey is available in 45 countries with their models: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M and Z4. the service is also compatible with the apple watch.
