volvo says the 360c would create new demand for inter-city taxi passengers travelling as far as 300 km (186 miles). it claims the car will feature level 5 autonomy, removing the need for a human driver and by the looks of the video will feature some sort of digital assistant. it uses a system of light and audio signals to notify pedestrians and other cars about the its’ movements – a system volvo hopes will become the standard ‘in how autonomous vehicles can safely communicate with all other road users.’ volvo is eyeing a 2021 release date with ambitious views for the 360c, believing it could revolutionize short-haul air travel, city dwelling and our environmental footprint.

  • I have owned many Volvos, starting with a 544. …I see two issues: 1) To my eye, there is not a ‘Volvo’ line on this concept… 2) I understand some cities in CA provide designated places for people who have no other place to sleep, but in their car… yet, I seriously doubt one of them could afford this.

  • To Jim above, try not to diss homeless folks on a design website, most don’t really wanna sleep in their car. Beyond that this a beautiful concept like many with the same idea of having a car be more than a car. Volvo if someone is going to commute all night in a self driving vehicle where is the toilet in this thing? And I’m never going to trust a car to ferry me down the freeway while I sleep without a human operator at the wheel. I know that self driving cars are all the rage, however something that requires cellular signal to stay on course is frightening even to the densest of folks.
