the station wagon, also know as the estate car has been in decline since the 1970s. thanks to the popularity of american minivans and SUVs, the versatile shapes of a station wagon have been successfully continued only by european car manufactures. in stockholm, sweden volvo has revealed the next chapter of it’s station wagon heritage with the ’V90’. the versatile series began more than 60 years ago with the volvo ‘duett’, and has continued with a clear step forward in terms of aesthetics, materials and finishes, while still living up to the practicality that made it well known.

wagons have always been celebrated for offering large cargo space without compromising driving dynamics or radically increases in weight.’we have a very strong position in the estate segment,’ explains håkan samuelsson, president and chief executive of volvo cars. ‘in many people’s minds we are known as the definitive estate brand. while the volvo brand today stands for more than estates, we are proud to carry forward this rich heritage with the V90.’

the ‘V90’ is the third car unveiled in the company’s ’90’ series, all of which are built on a specially designed and fully modular ‘scalable product architecture’. this has opened up a range of opportunities in terms of how volvos can be designed, built and equipped. the station wagon also delivers the latest pilot assist semi-autonomous drive technology. this system includes large animal detection, run-off road mitigation and complete smartphone connectivity through apple ‘carplay’.

‘the modern premium estate is all about the intriguing combination of a luxurious experience with the functional origins of the estates silhouette,’ explains thomas ingenlath senior vice president for design at volvo cars. ‘the sophisticated ambience of our new volvo interiors is combined with a great cargo space, providing the right kind of functionality – whether through connectivity or cargo and storage solutions.’

  • A little bulky at the nose. Our 2008 V70 wagon is a little more graceful. (you will note they did not include the 2008+ in their ‘parade of wagons’. Wonderful cars however, we have had one since the model PV544.
