on june 9, japanese company cocoa motors launched ‘walkcar’ (previous coverage here), a portable vehicle you can carry around like a laptop. the 2.9 kg (6.4 pounds) vehicle, which has the same size as a 13-inch laptop, offers a new lifestyle choice that is not dependent on any transportation network. thanks to its small size, users can alternate easily between riding ‘walkcar’ and walking, while it automatically stops at the user’s footstep when they get off from the vehicle.all images courtesy of cocoa motors

invented in japan by cocoa motors, ‘walkcar’ is a laptop-sized, lightweight vehicle that can easily fit in a bag or be carried around while walking. its height is just 74 mm, while its flat and square standing surface allows users to step off instantly and safely in any direction. four sensors installed in the standing surface let the user control the basic maneuver as they shift their weight to accelerate, decelerate, and turn without using a handle or a remote controller.

‘walkcar’ comes with self-healing paint coating on its surface, which is hard to scratch and improves grip for more stable riding. it is made of carbon fiber and aircraft grade aluminum, both of which allow for a very lightweight, strong vehicle. after five years of research, cocoa motors developed a special motor for ‘walkcar’, which enables it to drive at a speed of 16/km per hour, and on slopes with a 10 degree incline.
