cyberdog 2 is lighter, smarter, and more lifelike

On August 14, 2023, smart manufacturing company Xiaomi held its annual speech at the China National Convention Center, where it launched many new products, from smartphones to ecosystem products and even innovative robotics — like the CyberDog 2. Developed as a second iteration of its bio-inspired quadruped, this new version is even more intelligent and lifelike, with softer features and fancier tricks to impress its owners. Weighing just 8.9kg, approximately the size of a Doberman, the pet bot is also 40% smaller in size than the previous CyberDog generation.

The newly-launched robot is equipped with Xiaomi’s self-developed CyberGear Micro-actuator, further enhancing the robot’s mobility and supporting high-difficulty maneuvers, like continuous back flips and fall recovery. It comes with more precise control and will remain intact, even if continuously touched. CyberDog 2 also features a fusion sensing and decision-making system packed with 19 sensors for vision, touch, and hearing.

xiaomi integrates bionic concepts into every detail

To create such a likelike iteration, Xiaomi (see more here) integrated the bionic concept into every design detail of Cyberdog 2. More specifically, the team borrowed the anatomy of a Doberman’s head to complete the biomimetic design, combined with newly crafted leg proportions and a further optimized body shape. As for movement, the new generation includes 12 built-in Xiaomi micro-motors and advanced motion control algorithms to elevate the robot’s capabilities in a leap. According to the company, the torque accuracy of a single motor has improved by 50% compared to the previous generation; in fact, peak torque density reaches 37.85 N.m/kg.

From ballet steps to wiggling its butt or even spacewalking, the Cyberdog 2’s response to commands will set expectations pretty high for future owners. The high-precision is developed through the Xiaomi AI Reinforcement Learning Platform, whereby each action has undergone over 30,000 repetitions of AI-simulated dog training to bring every move closer to reality.

state-of-the art sensors & processors mimicking canine instinct

Beyond mastering tricks and movement, CyberDog 2’s packaging of state-of-the-art sensors and processors turns intelligence into canine instinct, developing a real capability to respond to complex situations. Xiaomi integrated, what it calls, an AI Multimodal Fusion Perception Decision System, composed of 21 TOPS computational power, a high-performance NX chip paired with dual co-processors (capable of 2.1 million trillion calculations per second), and up to 19 sensors that offer multidimensional perception capabilities to recognize not only its owners but also roads.

When it comes to hearing, the CyberDog 2 holds four sets of microphones, coupled with the Xiaomi AI voice algorithm, allowing it to instantly understand what its owners say. As for its visual sensitivity, the robot comes packed with four different types of cameras: Intel® RealSense™ D430 for depth, a 13MP for AI interactivity, 1MP for RGB coloring, and a FOV 146° for fisheye visualization. Lastly, the sense of touch is optimized thanks to an integrated TG30 laser sensor and ToF ultrasonic sensor.

cyberdog 2’s multi-modal control and open-system perks

Interaction with the dog-bot is established through a Bluetooth 5.0 system and 802.11ac Wi-Fi, allowing owners to input their commands via a UWB Bluetooth remote control, a mobile application, or speech. In addition, CyberDog 2 has been made as open-source as possible, from coding to structural drawings, as well as providing graphical programming and modular processing of various sensing capabilities — to co-create with developers worldwide. ‘With its continuous open-source ecosystem, the CyberDog family will attract more developers to participate while continuously promoting the progress and enhancement of bio-inspired robots to truly benefit people’s lives in the future,’ writes Xiaomi.
