3D printed bus shelter offers a canopy of recycled materials in china

the town of fengjing in shanghai, china, recently put the world’s first 3D printed bus station into service for public transportationthe concrete-looking winsun structure was printed using recycled materials at the company’s shanghai facility in one night and was transported to a country lane that only had a stop sign previously.

the 3D printing technology for the bus stop was provided by winsun construction technologies, an additive manufacturing company based in the jinshanyuan, zhangjiang national innovation park. it features a closed-loop design that looks like a rectangular frame. a trail of the original ink marks still remains on structure’s surface, allowing eagle-eyed spectators to see how the shelter was 3D printed layer by layer. the grey colored materials are taken from environmentally friendly sources that stem from the recycling of construction demolitions, and were chosen for their ability to blend into the style of ancient town of fengjing naturally. the people taking shelter in the bus stop mostly come from surrounding villages and towns in the jinshan district.

  • This product is crude and does not exhibit any advanced offerings of this fabrication technology. “3D Printing” or additive fabrication processes enable integrated design components (benches, stairs, ramps), and opportunities for innovative geometric solutions to traditional architectural references (windows generated by morphing geometry, structural framework should be optimized, skin thickness should be reduced when possible to save material and space). Such a clumsy, under-thought and under-designed exhibit should not be introduced to the public in such a brash and offensive manner.
