Meet zigy, a concept single-seater electric vehicle for city driving

London’s often congested and narrow roads sparked the design inspiration for Zigy, a concept compact electric urban vehicle created by independent mobility designer Andrea Mocellin and lightweighting experts DEXET Technologies. It resembles a hooded electric motorcycle, making it ideal for everyday commutes, and this single-seater ride can navigate congested city streets with ease given its sleek design.

The design duo believes their concept single-seater electric urban vehicle, Zigy, may achieve both aerodynamic efficiency and lightweight construction through their material choices. They plan to craft its chassis from thermoplastic composites, known for their reusability and improved recyclability compared to thermosets. A selection of carbon and natural fibers are also chosen for the exterior and interior bodywork panels, further contributing to Zigy’s weight reduction compared to typical vehicles.

Electric urban vehicle with a mini sunroof

Andrea Mocellin and the DEXET Technologies team brainstormed and designed their concept single-seater electric urban vehicle, Zigy, in around three months. They employed hand sketches, 2D and 3D initial prototypes, and VR simulations to refine and shape its final form. During the process known as Design Research, they involved user behavior analysis, package studies, proportion modeling, material exploration, and interface development.

The final design of Zigy incorporates glass curves around the roof and front, masking over the sides of the single-seater too. This allows for a mini sunroof and wider outward views to improve the driver’s visibility of the road. A seemingly silver edge protrudes and belts around Zigy, housing the head and rear lights in a single strip. The battery pack is located under the vehicle, with the motors likely positioned within the wheels.

Andrea mocelli and DEXET team up for Zigy

Engineering compact vehicles and assistive seating options like foldable wheelchairs are hallmarks of Andrea Mocellin’s work. For Zigy, he teamed up with DEXET Technologies, driven by their shared vision of producing a small, zero-emission vehicle designed specifically for city commuting.

Ergonomics and efficiency were key design considerations for the duo. After numerous design iterations, they claim to have devised a concept single-seater electric urban vehicle that embodies aerodynamics, aesthetics, and passenger visibility. As of publishing the story, Zigy remains a concept electric vehicle.
