throughout his studies at the bezalel academy of arts and design, jerusalem, michael tsinzovsky has been focusing on trying to learn about the culture of israeli design, is such even exists within the young country that doesn’t necessarily have a long tradition of arts, crafts and industrial design. conducting a number a case studies on the local design culture of his native country, which he states ‘tries to be european in the center of the middle east’, he looks to local craft production and form, drawing from arabic carpets and arabesques, investigating the work of the german carpenters who immigrated to the country, and examining the cultural mix between the people that have gathered from all around the world and the jewish diaspora which has formed the melting-pot of today’s israeli society. the series of experimental furniture objects includes stools, tables and chairs, produced in wood and metal.

the ‘asli’ series of stools are a case study of combining thoughts and questions about local icons, crafts and materials. techniques which are used to produce each of the three objects are: pressure molding galvanized steel, african walnut which has been CNC cut and laser cut veneer on oriented strand board (OSB).

the table and chair series of ‘co-existence’ are meant to stand as an inclusive metaphor for relationships in local design: society and nationalities in israel; ornament and construction; craft and design; craft and industry; metal and wood; east and west; geography and nationality.
