authorities have stayed true to their decision to demolish ai weiwei's shanghai studio,
located in the northern district of jiading. destruction of the building has begun.

considered one of the most outspoken contemporary chinese artists / activists of our time,
ai weiwei's studio was deemed illegal by the government who said it did not follow the
proper building permits, so plans for the building's demolition were slated.

funnily enough, it was also the government and jiading mayor sun jiwei who originally
approached the artist two years ago, inviting him to open a studio space in the chinese city's
agricultural district as part of their plan to develop into a cultural centre of the metropolis,
and they had promised to help him acquire the necessary documents to erect the building.

back in november 2010, the artist offered his supporters 10, 000 river crabs as a means of celebrating
the government's order to demolish the structure. crabs as the dish of choice could be
considered a bit of a political statement as the chinese name for the river crustaceans sounds like 'harmonize',
a common figure of speech used by chinese authorities in reference to government censorship.
more than 400 followers attended the successful event.

supporters and followers of ai weiwei have been uploading their documentation of the demolition real time.
you can view images of the progress here.

I am horrified....

Really J? You find this such good news? I think that we can see an apologist for the Chinese authorities here (or perhaps, simply a mole). The fact of the matter here is that the demolition is linked to the authorities wanting to appropriate the land in order to turn it over to 'private' development. That ai weiwei's work and person is under attack, currently, by the Chinese authorities, should be a cause for grave alarm, not childish celebration.

what a shame!

Typical anti-China media slant. Check Baidu, China's Google, for the real story:

- The township that solicited Ai Weiei for the village studio project neglected to arrange for proper building permit.

- On July 23, 2009, Ai Weiei was notified of lack of permit by Shanghai City, but construction continued.

- The official initiated the project tried to save the building. They offered to compensate Ai in exchange for the building to be donated to the village collective, in order to qualify for public project exemption, but Ai Weiei refused.

- After over a year, Shanghai City finally issued the demolition order.

Should prominent artist be allowed to ignore the law and erect illegal building?

thanks to Chasi to remind some information about the reality of the situation and the context. It is annoying to always read complaisant comments about the 'Poor' Ai Wei Wei instead of trying to understand the strategies of manipulation. Propaganda is not only in one way.
2011   01.13.11
ai wei wei is no rebel, c'mon. he is as much a rebel as mick jagger and keith richards. his anti-china politics was his ticket to fame, he should kowtow to the mainland authorities for continuing to bother him, as it translates to worldwide liberal art money, ka-ching ka-ching, and we ain't talking no cheap renmenbi RMB
bruce lee lo mo   01.13.11
Yeah yeah, eff this eff that. You didn't even look at the facts presented did you? Had you read it you'd noticed I made a HUGE error in translation. The initial notification is 2010 no 2009.

Still, none of this arrises to the level of human rights concern. Our media's sensationalist attitude towards China serves no purpose other than to demonize China and de-legitimize the Chinese government.
ChasL   01.14.11
Whoever is right, the fact is that a museum was demoslished, thatīs always to be sorry.

Also, making weiwei the demon and that he didnīt have the right permit for this doensīt hide the fact that China is a dictatorial regime and this goes exactly right with their politics, leaving the people in ignorance and stupidity to continue with the regime.

Until China is a free country, I will always be on the opposite side, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".
Whocares?   01.15.11
he is real parrot of western countries supporters!
shogasen   01.15.11
Right on, Whocares! China needs to grow up and learn to respect individual and human rights.
Monkfish   01.15.11
I am a Chinese.China has its own problems. But that doesnt mean you foreigners could see things clearer than us.
