'hiding in triangles' - mountain bike hotel by philip modest schambelan and anton fromm
the new mountain bike hotel is a proposal by philip modest schambelan and anton fromm.
located on the edge of pregasina in italy offers sports enthusiasts a place to stay,
an unforgettable view and a fast connection to an impressive variety of routes, trails
and single tracks.
pregasina is located on a plateau 500 meters above the northern tip of lake garda.
to totally exploit the panoramic view the new hotel is situated on a steep mountain ridge on
the southeastern edge of the small town. this on the one hand dissociates the new building
of the traditional architecture, on the other hand the unconventional construction can be
guessed by a small
protrusion.
the principles in the draft include: complete access by mountain bike at all
levels, maximum use of the panoramic view of lake garda and the mountain slopes of
the alps, no impairment of the view from pregasina and a full and individual
accommodation of riders and sports equipment in each residential unit.
to ensure the trafficability each access element has a tilt angle of 12 °. the angle of
the access routes to each other changes both by the natural curve of the mountain, as well
as by the decreasing distance between the building and the mountain in the vertical direction.
these two factors generate the fixed points in the front supporting framework, as well as
spaces in the metal braiding. In these spaces, the residential units will be established.
the structure is stabilized by three cores, which provide access to the rooms. thus, way
and construction form a unit that defines the form.
the access routes form two different paths, which are connected on the top and bottom floor.
this system of a contiguous band provides an optimal pathways in terms of trafficability
and the access to each residential unit.
the main facade is oriented towards the north-east, which guarantees each unit a view of
the northern tip of the lake. at the same time it allows shading of the living areas by the hill.
the communal areas such as coffee shops, snack bar, the sun deck and a media room are located
on the top floor, level 0, which looks out over the mountain easily. here, the sunlight is desired
and used.

Hideous architecture with no consideration for context. I hope this doesn't get built.
World Man About Town 04.12.10
well thig Philip guy is modest only in his last name!

Too synthetic. Lack of nature.
Axay 04.12.10
Who on Earth is looking for "natural" architecture on designboom?
R. 04.12.10
Wild! Fantastic idea. Call me when it's ready and I'll ride over.
Jeffrey 04.12.10
At first glance I thought this was pretty wicked. But I must agree with the first couple of comments. Take the third image from the top, imagine it without the building, and you see the beautiful surrounding coutryside. Architecture in this context should complement the environment, and add to its beauty, not create a scar upon it.
IF 04.12.10
Ohhhhh yeahhhh, all them mountains, that big ass lake and open sky is completely and utterly overshadowed by this so called 'synthetic' structure that just dominates the entire geography it occupies. Once again the brightest and the boldest venture forth and enlighten us with such razor edge critique and analysis that we are left to wonder how on earth modern architecture could breath through the analysis and readings of such agile and informed minds.

love the bikini clad girl doing her hair. mountain bikers dream.
ben 04.13.10
Love it! Brilliant concept. I can imagine looking up at a mountainside with a building such as this, take in the daring and creative design/build process - and thank the folks who have the vision to put it there d;-)

I love the concept, and understand the idea, but the dark beam structure seems a little bit too heavy

My structures professor would die if he saw this project; hopefully that cliff is incredibly strong. Really fun idea, as an architecture student and bike nerd myself I'd love to visit here. I understand the problem when it comes to adapting a project to the environment, but you could easily see this as a fractured rock or crystallized piece of the lake clinging to the cliff side. I hope the interior space doesn't just get jammed into the frame. As impressive as this could look, if the inside space is awkward or cramped it wouldn't be as successful. But I think this is the right direction, encouraging the merge between bikes, the most sustainable way to get around (besides walking, I suppose) and buildings.
Jgil 04.14.10
I like the concept but yet it's still a manmade wart on the beautiful natural hillside, Mountain bikers also destroy a lot of the natural habitat + this is so unsustainable!!! Green? I dont think so. I've seen how Mountain Bikers destroy local habitats in ie: New Zealand, Vancouver Canada, Portland Oregon USA, Parque Nacional Tayrona Colombia, etc how do they destroy these habitats? by driving their f__ing Suvs with they're bikes mounted on top to the trailheads!
Luis Blanc 04.14.10
looks nice
but the inside looks like they ran out of ideas
really small rooms
and i cant see a real concept for the arrangements of the rooms as well
