light pool designed by hironao tsuboi
light pool is a mobile phone created for a world where time, light, sound, smell, and other senses
seem to flow around you. designed by hironao tsuboi light pool has a unique form never before
seen in a mobile phone, which is composed of a truss-like structure and surfaces.  the light that
flows from the triangular windows give the phone a distinct identity. at the center of the concept
is the blend of light and music. the 22 LEDs arranged along the triangular windows that cover the
surface of the phone blend with the rhythm of music to create a 'gorgeous scene' in the dark.
the design comes with ten preset light and sound sequences developed by visual artist and
musician masakatsu takagi and also allows the user to add more of their own from its 60 different
light patterns, which can also be assigned to caller IDs.

piccell via primsoid by kohei nawa
'nawa’s art product visualizes the infinite variety of information that blankets our world and
surrounds your prismoid mobile phone. prismoid captures and processes this information
and the cells attached to the surface of the phone offer a visible rendition of this phenomenon.
the information concealed within the cells emit a unique light and resonance, thereby giving
shape to the beauty of this strange sensation. harboring sensation and reality, these cells
are amplified even further. this art product gives shape to phenomena that are normally
invisible to our eyes, and so have a powerful impact by giving rise to a feeling of nostalgia.
the elements incorporated into mobile phones as digital information are lifted back up into
the analog world once again by means of a monitor covered by a transparent sphere.
nawa’s dynamism produces an entirely new shape by controlling the phenomena. this art
product may just be pointing to the future of mobile phones.'

botanica makoto azuma
'the flower artist generated a sense of surprise and amazement among all age groups in
his plant-inspired 'botanical sculpture'. azuma’s artwork proposes to fuse lifestyle with
flowers by combining the ever-portable mobile phone with plant life. plants may be the very
thing we unconsciously but earnestly seek out in our hectic, ever-changing everyday lives.'

'however, live plants are not the only way for you to experience greenery. what if the mobile
phone could be made into a tool that enables you to feel and love plants? based on that idea,
this art product represents a unique style that allows you to engraft an array of exquisitely
made plant parts as a base for your phone. these plants include the baobabu tree, cherry
blossoms, rafflesia, and luminous moss, ranging from seasonal flowering plants to the rarest
plants found throughout the world. as you incorporate this array of plant parts into your
handset, you will be able to interact with them as though you were gazing at a botanical
picture book. as you use your mobile phone, your awareness of plants will increase, allowing
plants to become evermore rooted in your heart, and eventually linking you to a greater
awareness of the environment. it may be that such an art product as this harbors a power
that can even affect our entire ecological cycle.'

Even though I personally think that KDDI has long made the best phones , last time I was in Tokyo I noticed that a lot of people had the iPhone... is it time that KDDI moved on from the flip-phone and went head to head with apple, I'm pretty sure they could out-box them!

i think iida is working too much with local designers who grew up with the flip phone. Probably, just probably, they could work with foreign designers to come up with innovative candybar or touchscreen designs. After all, the Marc Newson Kddi phone was what introduced me to Japanese handphones...
