'electronic ruler' by shay shafranek and oded webman
'electronic ruler' is a concept that has been designed by shay shafranek and oded webman
with the support of udk industrial design department, berlin.
so how does it work? by pressing the button the digits illuminate and the ruler is ready
to go. passing a pencil along the edge of the ruler will make the numbers go up or down
according to the length of the line. pressing the button again will reset the value.

'electronic ruler' - line of resistors.
the point touched affects the voltage according to the current resistor

measuring lines and calculating from two points
touching the ruler after resetting defines a new zero point. now touching other points
along the ruler will give the definitive distances to the zero.

Come on! Talk about overdesigned....

overdesigned? maybe.... want one? DEFINATELY ! ;)

Oh yay! Another over designed electronic POS. More crap for the landfill. Good design does not complicate what was simple.

i gotta say it's cool, but i agree that it was over designed. What if you need to make several lines with spaces in between, would you be able to do it. I still love my olc classic ruler, where my eyes can help doing measurements without having to think TOO much ...
Dita 07.14.09
the only thing missing here is the sense of 'scale' you have when you use a regular ruler

most definitely not over design, come on guys this is an extremely creative solution for the simple process of drawing a line.

whatever! that is just plain 'try-to-be-design-for-all bullshit' better use light instead of sound for the deaf.
better use smell instead of feeling for the numb

Yea, I agree. I think this is a perfect example of something being over designed. It's trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. I would be interested in knowing how the price of this ruler would compare to an ordinary ruler.
However it would be a good uni project, but I don't believe it is commercially viable.

i wonder if its as reliable as my steel rule i use everyday?lol

this not so much over designed but superfluous.
ae 07.15.09
the idea is that you can change the scale units, and the ruler is not absolute but relative. wherever you start measuring from becomes the zero point.

the led numbers shining through the wood is not original, and i agree that is overdesigned, this is totally not usefull , and keep it simple! why create such difficult ruler when the known works fine.
ls 07.21.09
it is interesting
but...
in the end is just a ruler! keep it simple!

I use a ruler mainly to measure stuff than drawing straight lines....and this would be awesome if it displayed the stupid Imperial Units (we don't use metric in the US). I'm always confused if something is 1/8 or on the 1/16 tick mark.... and then try to figure out what's next. (fyi: 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, and 1).
