Regarding scrollbars - check Google Wave. One thing I don’t really understand, is its scrollbars.
They behave quite differently from regular ones, and I can’t see any overwhelming advantages of Google’s implementation.

Scrollbars as they currently exist are part of the system chrome rather than the page content. As most systems implement the width of the bar to match the general system chrome, it is impossible to determine how much space you are actually going to get in the scroll area - this causes lots of annoying design issues.
The gWave approach is an attempt to remove the problem, but does mean that you need to plan for some padding both in and outside the scroll area, which makes it a poor attempt. Apple's iPhone CocoaTouch solution is better, but has it's own limitations.
